ELISE PIKE

As an artist you draw upon significant experiences that have shaped who you are, for myself this would have to be my personal relationship with water.  Often at times this has been turbulent and horrific but the power of water and its surroundings can be also soothing  and meditative. Its an element that can be nurturing but it additionally has the power to destroy.

My representation of water through the curved lines of the lino plates is a combination of abstract and realistic qualities that are inspired from a series of photographs taken while experimenting with different densities such as ink and oil on water. I observed their allure and rhythmic patterns that were created within this fundamental element and felt an urge to recreate this beauty through printmaking.

Ultimately my prints are abstract pieces that follow the unique oil and ink patterns that  lie on the surface of the water. The soft quality of my prints are a conscious decision to communicate a soothing, relaxing atmosphere that differs from everyday life.
